Some Quiet Place by Kelsey SuttonSome Quiet Place
by Kelsey Sutton
(pub. 7/13)

The concept alone was enough to make me pick up this book: Elizabeth doesn’t feel emotions–she sees them in human form. Fear is cocky, Courage is his brother and opposite in every way. Emotions aren’t the only things that are personified though–Nightmare, Rain, etc. are also around. This book is written beautifully and is unlike many of the novels I have read: it has an original concept rather than a basic rehash of cliches.

by Brian K. Vaughan
(pub. 10/12)

I’ve always disliked the term space opera but Saga has saved it for me. Part Star Wars part love story- mostly Romeo and Juliet (if they had a chance to have a baby). It’s a rare thing to find a sky-ence fiction story that portrays such a personal emotional character driven narrative so elegantly and personally. If you haven’t read Y: the Last Man (first of all what is your problem) and secondly you will be just as psychologically drawn in with the characters as you were with Y. Great for sci-fi fans and fans of indie comics. On top of the great story Fiona Staples’ illustrations are gorgeous and work perfectly with Vaughn’s story.

9781442440753Burn for Burn
by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian

Burn for Burn was a surprise! Reading it was like peeling an onion – so many layers. I originally thought I was getting a simple chick-lit story, but what I ended up with was something more touching, something more moving. And yes, there will be a sequel!

9780399162411The 5th Wave
by Rick Yancey

The 5th Wave is a totally unique, gritty, terrifying and one of the most furious page turners I’ve read in a great long while. What if there is life out beyond our planet-what if there are Others who look like us-but trusting another human being can cost you your life. Cassie is that rare protagonist that shows fear with every act of bravery. The 5th Wave will knock you out!!!

In a post-apocalyptic world Evie has visions – and not the good kind. This book is a thrilling combo of romance and adventure in a dystopian setting.

9781442485389Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
by Cassandra Clare
(pub. 3/07)

My teen equivalent of Harry Potter. City of Bones is about a girl, Clary, who discovers a secret world of demon hunters. Woven with a new mythology, City of Bones (and it’s sequel) mix fantasy with teen issues extremely well.
