“You come face to face with love, and before the sun sets, you’ve become someone you didn’t used to be.”

I don’t know what took me so long to read East of West but I should have been reading it a lot sooner. SO AWESOME. It is a semi-futuristic western / love story set in a pre-apocalyptic world on the verge of the apocalypse. That is the briefest this story can be described. Not even mentioning the three horsemen of the apocalypse have come to earth in search of destroying the fourth horsemen, Death, and fulfilling the prophecy of the apocalypse. There are a lot of angles and sides being played in this story but not to the point of confusion and none overriding the overarching story of love and betrayal. I love this series. Fans of Saga or Preacher will feel right at home with East of West.

Saga by Brian K. Vaughan

(pub. 10/12)

I’ve always disliked the term space opera but Saga has saved it for me. Part Star Wars part love story- mostly Romeo and Juliet (if they had a chance to have a baby). It’s a rare thing to find a sky-ence fiction story that portrays such a personal emotional character driven narrative so elegantly and personally. If you haven’t read Y: the Last Man (first of all what is your problem) and secondly you will be just as psychologically drawn in with the characters as you were with Y. Great for sci-fi fans and fans of indie comics. On top of the great story Fiona Staples’ illustrations are gorgeous and work perfectly with Vaughn’s story.

Kim Stanley Robinson is one of our great science fiction writers and will gather many more followers with his new novel that is set 30,000 years ago and chronicles life at that time.  With his wonderful imagination we are immersed into a time when respect for nature and the earth are gloriously celebrated.  This book moves like the breath of life, inhaling and exhaling.

This is a fun sci-fi read. Not to spoil anything but just think about all those characters in Star Trek that wore red shirts and only lasted one episode. What if they were real? Once again John Scalzi, author of “Old Man’s War” has written a truly fun mind-bending romp through space and time. Don’t miss it.

The 5th Wave

The 5th Wave
by Rick Yancey

I DO NOT read sci-fi, alien invasion stories. I DO NOT, WILL NOT read sci-fi, alien invasion stories. When I realized that was what I was reading when I picked up 5th Wave, I wanted to stop reading and give it back. But the book wouldn’t let me. Instead I read this story in two days, only stopping to sleep and work. The 5th Wave is exciting thought-provoking and at times sweet, sad and touching. There was one thing I didn’t like about The 5th Wave and that was the ending. I want a sequel, NOW. And so will you after you read The 5th Wave. Will I continue to read sci-fi, alien invasion books? Only if they are written by Mr. Yancey.

The 5th Wave is a totally unique, gritty, terrifying and one of the most furious page turners I’ve read in a great long while.   What if there is life out beyond our planet-what if there are Others who look like us-but trusting another human being can cost you your life.  Cassie is that rare protagonist that shows fear with every act of bravery. The 5th Wave will knock you out!!!
